over the years of discovering music, i will always fall back on something to help me – critics’ list. im an obsessive follower of lists and am intrigued with any kind of lists – big or small. its via going through such lists that i have my basic education on music. oh and the late john peel helped a lot as well. so what else can be done for a list-whore like me is to make up my own. i’ve decided at the beginning of this year to do up the top 10s of every year – and it was only recently that i came up with the idea that the starting point should be the year that i was born i.e. 1973. during the course of the year, work and daily life, plus my procrastination kind of stalled this project. its around my birthday month that i jumpstart this again and make the best out of it.

doing up lists for past years are not without difficulty. so i would have to base on existing lists to choose and create the initial selection first. that prompted another issue. as with most critics’ lists, the choices are more or less than same. its kinda boring that every other lists you will see Bob Dylan or Pink Floyd on the various GREATEST ALBUMS IN THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE – as someone put it aptly, arent you sick of what they tell you?

but evidently, those safe choices are in fact pretty good and solid stuff, and there are reasons why they are still highly regarded. while i probably scoff at my end results, this is no way an end to these lists. it will be refined and fine-tuned throughout so that it will reflect what i have been listening. i reckon at the end of this, it will be something that i would be proud of. (:

well i have, besides the music lists, decided to try doing a film equivalent. pretty ambitious, since im nowhere near finishing what i have started on the music lists. but having found a database of 7900 over film titles, sorted by year is too good to be ignored. i have almost gone thru the Noughties (00), but with several small issues. the database is based on US release, but ive realised that the 2008 lists that i made DURING 2008 reflects films that are made in 2007, because some of them came late to my shore. haven already gone thru the 2000-2006, i decided to stick with what the US release dates are, and when it comes to both 2008 and 2009, it would have to be based on what is being released here as opposed to the US release date. that is because the database that i have referenced do not reflect the 2008 and 2009 fully yet. :s hope that clear things up even though im confused as what i have just typed. oh well, back to the drawing board….

ok, so 8 years on from last update and here i am, jump starting this again. it’s like a snowball, getting bigger as it rolls down the hill. due to a streaming music app i have been using, i am now constructing my favorite songs by year listing, so the scope gets bigger, work is more, and results are erm…minimal. LOL. anyways, hope this update will be more frequent. some new film lists have been updated though when i googled for some reference lists on the web, the year that some films are listed is different from the database i have been using. some titles differ by a year, while Asian and foreign titles by 2-3 years, which i find it normal as film distributors might take more time in bringing such titles. so for the meantime, i will have to stick with the database as my primary focal point. let’s hope my enthusiasm can be like the snowball…

another 7 years has passed since the last update and here i am again. perhaps a brand new year brings new energy and i can complete this by 2024. wish me luck and godspeed you black emperor!
